Roosterfish

The inshore trophy with the mohawk.

Roosterfish caught fishing in Costa Rica
  • Season: Year-round · best May – September
  • Typical size: 20 – 80 lb · released
  • Water: Inshore
  • Kept / Released: Catch & release

With its unmistakable seven-spined comb, the roosterfish is the crown jewel of Costa Rica's inshore fishing — and it fights like nothing else near the beach. Rooster fishing is close-in, visual and heart-stopping, perfect for anglers who want big-fish drama on a half-day trip. Almost always released.

Where & when

Close to shore over sand and rock, around river mouths, points and beaches — often within sight of the coast.

How we fish it

Slow-trolling or casting live bait (blue runners, mullet) close in, or poppers for the surface bite. A true light-tackle thrill.
